Ten Tips for Creating a Successful Gathering
- Start planning your gathering as long as a month in advance and create lists for a stress-free pace.
- Choose you gathering day of the week wisely. If you throw a party on a Sunday evening people will tend to leave early as they need to prepare for their work week.
- Pick a theme: Birthdays, anniversaries, and other celebrations are fun when they reflect the personalities or interests of the guests.
- Make a guest list: When deciding whom to invite, consider the size of your home or yard. How many guests can you comfortably accommodate?
- Send an invitation, either electronically, by telephone, or hand written. An invitation sets the tone of the party, establishes the theme, and creates excitement and anticipation for the guests you invite.
- Decorate. A gathering calls for a festive atmosphere even if it’s only candles and a vase of flowers.
- Plan an appealing menu. A gathering is about good food. Keep it simple and work with your theme. Here are guidelines for how much food to prepare for adults:

- Appetizers: 3 pieces per person (for a cocktail party, allow 8 pieces per person per hour)
- Meats: 1/2 to 3/4 pound per person
- Vegetables/Sides: 1/2 cup per person
- Salads, Tossed: 1 cup per person
- Salads, Main Dish: 1-1/2 to 2 cups per person
- Desserts: 2 portions per person
- Beverages: 12 ounces of wine, 24 of beer, or 24 of non alcoholic beverages per person
- Do ahead—the more you do ahead of time, the easier final preparations will be on the day of your gathering. Make food ahead, and refrigerate or freeze it.
- If someone offers to lend a hand, accept and turn preparation time into a gathering all its own.
- You can create fun and happiness in your home but you should want to do it regularly (not just at Christmas). Satisfaction and friendship will grow from there.
